WHO chief: Humanitarian situation in Gaza - staggering

03 December 2023 16:32

Director General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has written that the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip after the resumption of hostilities is staggering and it is hard to describe the whole situation.

“The information about ongoing fighting and bombing in Gaza is disconcerting. Our team of specialists visited Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza yesterday. It was full, with 1,000 patients, three times more than allowed. Numerous people were looking for a place to hide,” TASS reports citing the WHO director general’s message on X.

The WHO chief added that patients were lying on the floor, “screaming in pain” and they were treated by doctors in such circumstances.

“Such conditions not only are inadequate, but also unthinkable for rendering medical care. I cannot find words to express our concern. There is a need to cease fire immediately,” he emphasised.

Ghebreyesus has recently called for the resumption of humanitarian supplies to Gaza in the same volume as during the truce and pointed out the need to stop violence in the region.
