Will Stoltenberg remain NATO's Secretary General for another term?
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg could remain for a third mandate as his term is expiring in September of this year.
As reported by Politico, most world officials believe that Stoltenberg’s renewal as NATO’s Secretary General is a more secure solution than the election of a new candidate as he is "perceived as a high-ranking official who can keep cool in crisis situations".
While the "overall feeling" was that it was time for some "fresh air", according to a high-ranking NATO diplomat, the publication believes that the allies may end up playing it safe after all, and stick with Stoltenberg amid the war still raging in Europe.
However, his re-election is also a matter of concern. The article recalls that vote for the new Secretary General may coincide with the contest for the best positions in the EU in 2024 as well as the upcoming US presidential elections in 2024.
