WindRunner: US to build world's largest military airlifter aircraft carrier PHOTO
The American startup Radia from Colorado has unveiled its design for the WindRunner, a giant military transport aircraft that, according to the company, could carry up to four F-35 fighter jets or six CH-47 Chinook helicopters without disassembly.
Originally, the aircraft was developed to transport enormous wind turbine blades up to 100 meters in length. It is now being promoted as a “super-large air transport vehicle” for the Pentagon’s needs, Detaly.co.il reports.
According to the company, the cargo hold of the WindRunner will be seven times larger than that of the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy and twelve times larger than the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, making it the largest military transport aircraft in history.
Developers emphasise the internal volume, which would allow entire systems and complexes to be transported without disassembly — from fighter jets and helicopters to space rocket modules.
