WP: Google employees urge limits on Pentagon use of AI in classified projects
More than 600 Google employees, mostly from the company’s DeepMind division, have sent a letter to management calling for restrictions on the use of the company’s artificial intelligence technologies for classified applications by the Pentagon, according to The Washington Post.
Addressing the CEO Sundar Pichai, employees said they want to see “AI benefit humanity; not to see it being used in inhumane or extremely harmful ways.”
The initiative comes amid growing debate in the technology sector over the role of artificial intelligence in modern warfare.
The letter notes that AI is increasingly becoming a key component of armed conflicts, raising questions about the limits of its use.
Pentagon representatives have previously said they plan to use commercial AI technologies for “all lawful uses,” in compliance with US law and military procedures.
