WP: US, denmark close to Greenland deal

US and Danish diplomats have held at least five rounds of negotiations in an effort to resolve disagreements over Greenland, with a deal potentially being reached in the coming months, The Washington Post reports, citing a source familiar with the negotiations.

The report said the two sides are working on a compromise that would allow Washington to expand its military presence on the island without undermining Denmark's sovereignty or Greenland's autonomous government.

US Northern Command has already identified three potential locations for future military bases.

"We agree on the themes. We understand each other’s red lines," a source noted.

Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen signed the Defense of Greenland Agreement, complementing their NATO commitments and assigning the United States responsibility for defending the island against potential aggression.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly argued that the United States needs Greenland for national and international security.
