WP: US requests European intelligence on potential Iran strike targets
The United States has requested intelligence from its European allies on potential targets in the event of a military strike on Iran, officials familiar with the matter said.
According to the sources, representatives of President Donald Trump’s administration asked their countries to share intelligence on possible targets inside Iran, The Washington Post (WP) reports.
“We don’t have any indications that President Trump will target nuclear facilities. It is more likely that he will go after the leadership of organisations and forces that are responsible and involved in the killings of protesters,” one of the officials stated.
Israel’s air attacks in October 2024 significantly degraded Iran’s ability to detect incoming aircraft or missiles, destroying many of Tehran’s advanced Russian S-300 air defence systems and other military assets.
In June, Iranian defences suffered further setbacks from Israeli strikes during a 12-day conflict, which also included US airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon is increasingly concerned about the risk of Iranian retaliation, a person familiar with the administration’s thinking said.
In the weeks leading up to the Maduro mission, aircraft, ships and Special Operations forces were withdrawn from Central Command, the Defence Department command responsible for overseeing US forces in the Middle East.
