WSJ: Pentagon seeks $80 billion to cover costs linked to Iran

19 June 2026 11:05

The U.S. Department of Defence has requested approximately $80 billion to cover costs related to the recent war with Iran as well as other non-combat expenditures, according to lawmakers and people familiar with internal discussions cited by The Wall Street Journal.

Deputy Defence Secretary Stephen Feinberg informed members of Congress during phone calls this week about the funding requirement, sources said.

Lawmakers have been pressing the Trump administration to provide a detailed accounting of the financial impact of the conflict, which began on February 28. Congressional officials are seeking clarity on the total cost of the operation and its broader implications for U.S. military readiness.

A key concern raised by lawmakers is that the fighting may have significantly depleted stocks of critical munitions, potentially affecting the Pentagon’s ability to respond to other global security threats.
