WSJ: Trump, allies working on plan to nullify impeachments

12 June 2026 09:28

U.S. President Donald Trump and his allies are pressing lawmakers to pass a resolution aimed at voiding the impeachments he faced during his first term in office, according to a White House official, confirming The Wall Street Journal report.

Trump was impeached twice by the U.S. House of Representatives during his first presidency.

The first impeachment accused him of abusing his power in dealings with Ukraine, while the second charged him with incitement of insurrection following the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by his supporters. He was acquitted by the Senate in both cases.

The effort to nullify the impeachments comes as Trump continues to denounce the proceedings, which became a central theme of his successful 2024 election campaign against Democrat Kamala Harris.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Trump and his team are seeking congressional approval of a resolution that would formally declare the impeachments void.

White House officials have strongly urged forward progress on this issue, the White House official told reporters.

The Journal reported that such a resolution would carry little legal significance because the U.S. Constitution does not provide a mechanism for reversing an impeachment. However, it could offer Trump a symbolic victory over actions that have remained a source of political grievance since his first term.

"It’s no surprise that sane individuals are recognizing these sham efforts and are interested in undoing those shameful actions," said White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson when asked for a comment on the story.
