WSJ: US expects Iran to announce reopening of Strait of Hormuz
The United States is expecting an important announcement from Iran regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz in the coming days, The Washington Post (WSJ) reports, citing US officials.
The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the discussions, said they expect Iran to issue a public statement within the coming days confirming that the Strait of Hormuz is fully open and pledging that its forces will cease attacks on vessels transiting the waterway.
“They’re either going to give us that statement or we’re not going to have a good outcome for them,” one of the representatives noted.
Another official said indirect negotiations mediated by Qatar are aimed at achieving a wider peace arrangement. “I think that Iran is showing a lot of signs of wanting to make this deal,” the second official stressed.
