WSJ: US-Ukraine talks in Florida yielded no result for Kyiv's security guarantees
On November 30, another round of talks between Ukrainian and U.S. delegations was held in Florida to continue work on President Trump’s peace plan. However, a number of issues remained unresolved.
The discussions touched on possible new elections in Ukraine as well as prospects for a territorial exchange between Russia and Ukraine. At least one major issue, however, was left unsettled, The Wall Street Journal writes, citing a U.S. official.
The report reads other important questions remain unresolved, including the nature of U.S. and Western security guarantees for Ukraine, and whether the Kremlin will continue to demand international recognition of the occupied territories.
WSJ notes that the talks between the U.S. and Ukrainian delegations lasted more than four hours. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said progress had been made, while stressing that the negotiations are complex.
A WSJ source said that following Sunday’s talks, President Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and the U.S. president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner will fly to Russia on Monday to continue negotiations.
The U.S. president himself said on Sunday that Witkoff is likely to meet with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin this week.
The meeting also included Ukraine’s election timetable, the possibility of a territorial exchange between Russia and Ukraine, as well as several other unresolved issues between the White House and Kyiv within the framework of the proposed peace agreement.
According to the newspaper, special envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner plan to travel to Moscow later to continue negotiations with the Russian side.
