Xi Jinping calls China–Taiwan reunification a historical necessity

Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that the reunification of Taiwan with mainland China is an inevitable historical process, describing it as an unstoppable trend.

Speaking in his New Year address, broadcast by China Central Television (CCTV), Xi stated that people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are bound by shared history and blood ties.

“Our compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are connected by blood, and the historical trend toward the reunification of the motherland is unstoppable,” Xi said.

He also stressed that China must continue to firmly implement the “one country, two systems” principle and promote the integration of Hong Kong and Macau into the country’s overall development.
