Xi Jinping calls for peaceful resolution of maritime issues with Vietnam

14 April 2025 10:33

Chinese President Xi Jinping has emphasized that China and Vietnam should intensify their collaborative efforts to build the China-Vietnam community with a shared future, contributing more to peace, stability, development, and prosperity both in Asia and globally.

Xi made the comments in a signed article titled "Building on past achievements and making new advances in pursuit of shared goals," published by the Nhan Dan newspaper of Vietnam ahead of his state visit to the Southeast Asian nation, Caliber.Az reports, citing Chinese media.

The Chinese President highlighted that building the China-Vietnam community with a shared future holds strategic significance, benefiting the common interests of both nations. He argued it would also promote peace, stability, development, and prosperity in the region and beyond.

Xi called for deepening strategic mutual trust, advancing the socialist cause, continuing win-win cooperation, and ensuring the delivery of more benefits to the two peoples. He also stressed the importance of strengthening people-to-people exchanges, forging a closer bond between the two peoples, and enhancing multilateral collaboration to promote Asia's prosperity and revitalization.

Xi warned that "trade war and tariff war will produce no winner, and protectionism will lead nowhere." He added, "Our two countries should resolutely safeguard the multilateral trading system, stable global industrial and supply chains, and open and cooperative international environment."

"We should properly manage differences and safeguard peace and stability in our region," Xi said.

"The successful delimitation of our boundaries on land and in the Beibu Gulf demonstrates that with vision, we are fully capable of properly settling maritime issues through consultation and negotiation."

China and Vietnam have a complex relationship concerning maritime disputes, primarily in the South China Sea. Both nations assert territorial claims over the Paracel and Spratly Islands, leading to occasional tensions and confrontations. However, they have also demonstrated efforts to manage these disputes through diplomatic channels.
