Zambia VP escapes injury in campaign helicopter incident
Zambia’s Vice President Mutale Nalumango and seven members of her delegation escaped unharmed after a military helicopter carrying them crashed shortly after take-off on Thursday, July 9.
The incident occurred as the group was departing an election campaign rally in Nakonde, a town in northeastern Zambia, as per African media reports.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known.
Following the accident, Nalumango underwent a routine medical examination as a precaution and was later discharged in good health, according to an official government statement.
The incident comes as Zambia intensifies campaigning ahead of its general elections scheduled for August 13.
President Hakainde Hichilema is widely expected to secure a second term in office.
