Zelensky says Ukraine’s EU path to proceed regardless of Hungary’s stance
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that Ukraine will join the European Union regardless of the position taken by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof on October 6, Zelenskyy expressed confidence that the people of Hungary support Ukraine, even if their government’s stance differs, Caliber.Az reports per Ukrainian media.
The Ukrainian leader stated that EU membership represents the choice of the Ukrainian people and emphasised that the country’s path toward accession would not be blocked by any single member state.
Commenting on discussions within the EU about reforming decision-making rules, Zelenskyy noted that changes to the procedure could allow the bloc to move forward without requiring unanimity. He said that when all countries except Hungary support Ukraine’s accession, they should be able to find a mechanism to proceed.
Zelenskyy also underlined that Ukraine has met all the technical criteria required to open the first cluster of negotiations for EU membership.
