Zelenskyy announces upcoming meeting with President Trump
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that his adviser, Rustem Umerov, has reported new contacts with the United States.
Writing on his Telegram channel, Zelenskyy said, “Not a single day is wasted. We have agreed on a high-level meeting with President Trump in the near future. Much could be decided before the New Year. Glory to Ukraine!”
Since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump have engaged in several key meetings and contacts, reflecting the evolving diplomatic relationship between Kyiv and Washington.
Their first major post-inauguration encounter took place on February 28, 2025, at the White House. Intended as a show of support, the meeting reportedly became tense, with disagreements over military strategy and U.S. assistance, highlighting early differences in priorities.
In an effort to reset the dialogue, the two leaders met briefly on April 26, 2025, at the Vatican during the funeral of Pope Francis. The private discussion focused on reviving peace efforts, signalling a desire to move past the earlier confrontation.
By August 18, 2025, relations had improved sufficiently for Zelenskyy to return to Washington for a multilateral summit with Trump and European leaders. The meeting centred on coordinating strategies for peace, including U.S. support and potential negotiations with Russia.
Trump reportedly contacted Russian President Vladimir Putin during the summit to advance diplomatic discussions.
On September 23, 2025, the two presidents met briefly on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The encounter reaffirmed dialogue on defence cooperation and ongoing diplomatic efforts.
