Zelenskyy: Ceasefire still possible “We need more pressure on Russia”

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of Ukraine, met with European Council President Antonio Costa ahead of today’s (October 23) summit in Brussels, emphasising that a ceasefire with Russia remains within reach.

Speaking to Sky News’ Europe correspondent Siobhan Robbins, Zelenskyy said: "A ceasefire is still possible, of course, and all of us need a ceasefire. But we need more pressure on Russia."

Costa, meanwhile, welcomed Zelenskyy to the summit and reiterated Europe’s steadfast support for Ukraine.

Highlighting the importance of coordinated European action, Zelenskyy described the new sanctions package against Russia as "very important" and stressed that increased pressure on President Putin is essential to bring an end to the conflict.

EU leaders are convening in Brussels to address key issues, including Ukraine, European defence, recent Middle East developments, competitiveness, housing, and migration.

The summit comes amid ongoing Russian attacks on Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure. Leaders are set to explore ways to strengthen support for Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia to achieve peace. As President António Costa stated on October 18: 

“Our shared goal remains a just and lasting peace for Ukraine. Military, financial and diplomatic support, as well as security guarantees, are essential to achieving it.”

Discussions will also cover long-term financial assistance for Ukraine, potentially using Russia’s frozen assets. So far, the EU and its member states have contributed €177.5 billion in support, including €63.2 billion in military aid.
