Zelenskyy: If Ukraine fails, Europe will be left alone to confront Russia

29 January 2024 14:03

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has spoken about the consequences of delaying the US assistance to Ukraine as he was interviewed by the German ARD TV channel.

If America's aid to Ukraine is delayed, some European countries may also reconsider their position. This also threatens the loss of the US-European alliance, Zelenskyy said, OBOZ.UA reports.

The Ukrainian leader believes that this will not happen. However, Europe alone will not be able to provide Ukraine with the same level of support as it used to with the participation of the United States. Neither with weapons nor with finance.

"If this happens and the US delays the processes of supporting Ukraine, it will have an impact on the united Europe. And there are consistent problems here," Zelenskyy noted.

"The first is the shortage of weapons and finances in Ukraine. Second, I think the alliance between the US and Europe will be lost. Thirdly, Europe will realize that this is a signal that if Ukraine fails and Putin moves forward, this is a signal from the United States that Europe will be left alone among NATO countries to confront Russia," the president continued.

It will also signal that the North Atlantic Alliance is not as strong as it seems.

Meanwhile, the president noted that the Ukrainian army currently has a force level numbering about 880,000 troops.

"We have 880,000 troops; that’s an army of almost a million," he said, when asked about the army’s force strength. "Besides, we currently have a workforce of 30 million people, even though I can’t provide the exact number. Some 6.5 million to 7.5 million people have moved abroad, and again, I can’t give the accurate figure," Zelenskyy added.

On Trump’s victory in US presidential election, President Zelenskyy said he does not believe that if Donald Trump is elected president of the United States, Washington will stop providing assistance to Kyiv, adding he would be happy if the former head of the White House achieved peace in Ukraine in 24 hours. Zelenskyy noted that the majority of Republicans and Democrats are in favor of supporting Ukraine.

"Thus, it is unlikely that the policy of the United States depends on a single person," Zelenskyy said.

Referring to Trump's statement about his intention to quickly resolve the conflict in Ukraine in case of re-election, he noted: "If his formula leads to peace and it takes him 24 hours to do it, then I will be a very happy president." The President of Ukraine believes that if the United States really weakens its efforts to support Kyiv, then Berlin will have to take the lead. "Germany can consolidate the EU," he expressed his opinion.
