Zelenskyy names Anton Kovalskyi acting prosecutor general PHOTO

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has assigned Anton Kovalskyi, head of the Khmelnytskyi Regional Prosecutor’s Office, to serve as acting prosecutor general following the dismissal of Ruslan Kravchenko.

The appointment was made by presidential decree No. 946/2026, according to Ukrainska Pravda.

“In accordance with Part Two of Article 11 of the Law of Ukraine ‘On the Legal Regime of Martial Law,’ I hereby decree: to assign Anton Anatoliiovych Kovalskyi the duties of prosecutor general,” the decree says.

Kovalskyi had been identified as one of the main candidates for the position of prosecutor general even before his appointment, with Ukrainska Pravda reporting that the heads of the Khmelnytskyi and Dnipropetrovsk regional prosecutor’s offices were under consideration.

Kravchenko resigned against the backdrop of an investigation by Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) into alleged protection of call centres.

On September 14, Kravchenko said he had signed a notice of suspicion against NABU Director Semen Kryvonos. He also accused NABU and SAPO of taking possession of case materials concerning their employees during searches conducted as part of the “Carthage” special operation, allegedly to halt procedural decisions in those cases.

Law enforcement sources cited by Ukrainska Pravda said Kravchenko left Ukraine in an official vehicle on the night of September 14. He subsequently said he had gone on a business trip.

According to an order obtained by the publication, Kravchenko sent himself to Paris for five days “to participate in PACE hearings on Ukrainian children.” However, he was not listed among the speakers on the event’s agenda.

Zelenskyy subsequently appealed to parliament to urgently support Kravchenko’s dismissal. On September 15, the Verkhovna Rada approved his dismissal by 317 votes to zero, with 23 lawmakers not voting.

Zelenskyy then signed a decree formally removing Kravchenko from the post.
