Zelenskyy: Planned meeting with Trump could bring major changes

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he has agreed to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in New York, describing their latest conversation as an important step that could advance diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

“I just spoke with President Trump @POTUS. An important conversation, and we got through a lot. We agreed to meet in New York, and this meeting could change a lot. There is diplomatic momentum,” Zelenskyy wrote on X, Caliber.Az reports.

Zelenskyy did not specify a date for the planned meeting, but said the two leaders had discussed the situation in Ukraine and efforts to advance a peace process.

According to Zelenskyy, the peace process remains Ukraine’s “number one priority.” He said the two sides had discussed possible de-escalation measures as well as broader security concerns.

“There are ideas for de-escalation steps and for addressing fundamental security issues – energy security, food security, and the protection of human life,” Zelenskyy said.

He added that Ukraine was working closely with the U.S. team and was prepared to take what he described as “really serious steps” toward a settlement.

Zelenskyy also thanked Trump for the recent visit to Kyiv by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, saying the two U.S. representatives had been able to assess the situation in Ukraine firsthand.

The Ukrainian president said he and Trump had reviewed the details of the visit and discussed the situation in Ukraine in depth.

“I thanked the President for Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner’s visit to Kyiv,” Zelenskyy wrote. “We went through the key details thoroughly, and they saw the situation in Ukraine firsthand.”

Zelenskyy also thanked Trump for signing the Lindsey Graham bill into law, saying that both sides agreed on the need to achieve peace.

“I thanked the American President for signing the Lindsey Graham bill into law,” he said. “We all concur – there must be peace.”

Zelenskyy concluded his statement by thanking those supporting Ukraine and contributing to the diplomatic effort.
