Zelenskyy says ceasefire best option if it saves lives

25 July 2026 09:24

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said a ceasefire would be the most desirable outcome if it helps preserve lives, while reaffirming Kyiv’s willingness to pursue a peace agreement with Russia.

“If tomorrow we can achieve a ceasefire, it will be better than fighting for 10–20 years for victory and losing our people,” Zelenskyy said in an interview with U.S. political commentator Laura Loomer, published on X.

Zelensky argued that a prolonged war aimed solely at securing a military victory cannot justify sustained human losses, stressing that Ukraine’s priority remains the protection of its citizens and the pursuit of a just peace.

Responding to a question about signing a potential agreement with Russia in the United States, Zelenskyy said: “Yes, I am ready. I have always told President Donald Trump that I am ready to come to the United States, to the Oval Office or to Mar-a-Lago. It all depends on President Trump.”

He added that the key issue is not the venue but the timing of any agreement.

Zelenskyy also said that U.S. President Donald Trump has shifted his stance on Ukraine and now recognises that Russia is not interested in ending the war, while Kyiv remains committed to peace.

During the interview, the Ukrainian leader also addressed sanctions against Russia and Iran, but emphasised that saving lives and achieving peace remain Ukraine’s central priorities.
