Zelenskyy selects candidate for new Ukrainian defence minister

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has nominated Yevhen Khmara to head Ukraine’s Defence Ministry, Ukrainian lawmaker Yaroslav Zheleznyak said on Telegram.

Andrii Sybiha has been proposed as the next foreign minister. Both Khmara and Sybiha are currently serving as acting heads of their respective ministries, although their nominations have not yet been formally submitted to parliament.

Ukrainian media previously reported that Sybiha was likely to secure enough votes in the Rada to be appointed foreign minister, while expressing doubts over whether lawmakers would support Khmara’s candidacy. A vote on both candidates is expected on August 19.
