Zhuhai car attack kills 35, injures 43 in China
Thirty-five people were killed when a man drove his car into a crowd outside a stadium in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai on November 11 evening.
The incident, which occurred just ahead of an international air show in the city, also left 43 people injured, although none of the wounds were considered life-threatening, Caliber.Az reports citing Chinese media.
Police reported that the attack took place at 7:48 p.m. when a 62-year-old man, identified as Fan, drove an SUV into a restricted area on the outskirts of a sports centre and struck a group of people exercising. Authorities said the attacker was apprehended after attempting to take his own life and was taken to the hospital, where he was placed in a coma and unable to be questioned.
A preliminary investigation revealed that Fan’s actions were likely driven by frustration over the division of assets in his divorce. In response to the incident, President Xi Jinping ordered local governments to “strictly prevent extreme cases” like this one.
