Shavkat Mirziyoyev registered as presidential candidate
The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Uzbekistan registered incumbent President Shavkat Mirziyoyev as a candidate in the early elections of the head of the republic.
The CEC made the decision at the meeting, which was broadcast on its official website, Caliber.Az reported with reference to the Uzbek media.
Besides Mirziyoyev, the CEC registered three other candidates nominated by political parties: Robakhon Makhmudova of the Adolat Social-Democratic Party, Abdushukur Khamzayev of the Ecological Party and Ulugbek Inoyatov of the People's Democratic Party (PDP).
On 31 May, the Democratic Party of Uzbekistan "Milliy Tiklanish" nominated incumbent head of state Mirziyoyev as a presidential candidate in the early elections.
Uzbekistan's early presidential election is scheduled for July 9.
This will be the first presidential election since the constitution was amended to extend the president's term of office from five to seven years.
According to constitutional law, an incumbent president holding office for a second term may run for office again.
