Algeria says Niger accepts its initiative to restore constitutional order

02 October 2023 18:24

Niger has officially accepted Algeria's initiative to restore constitutional order in the country, Algerian state TV reported on October 2, citing the Algerian Foreign Ministry.

Algeria, which shares a border with coup-hit Niger, has proposed an initiative involving a six-month transition period in the country led by civilians, Xinhua reports.

On July 26, members of Niger's presidential guard detained President Mohamed Bazoum and seized power in the African country.

Following the military takeover, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, leader of Niger's presidential guard, was named "president of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland."
