Azerbaijani, Iranian chief prosecutors discuss trial of Tehran embassy attacker

Prosecutor General of Azerbaijan Kamran Aliyev held talks with Prosecutor General of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammad Kazem Movahedi-Azad in the format of videoconference.

During the online meeting, they discussed the course of the trial of the accused in the armed attack on the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran on January 27 this year, acceleration of the verdict, mechanism of legal cooperation, the press service of the Azerbaijani Prosecutor General's Office told Caliber.Az.

The sides shared thoughts on issues of interest for cooperation in the legal sphere.

Azerbaijani Ambassador to Iran Ali Alizada and Iranian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Seyyed Abbas Mousavi attended the meeting.

The trial on the case of the attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran will be held soon.

On January 27, an armed attack was carried out on the Azerbaijan embassy in Tehran, killing an Azerbaijani security officer and injuring two others.

The gunman, identified as Yasin Hosseinzadeh, was armed with a Kalashnikov rifle when he broke into the embassy building and killed the Azerbaijani officer. He was eventually stopped by the embassy’s security staff after a violent scuffle.

Iran said the attack stemmed from personal reasons, but Baku sees it as an act of terrorism.

Diplomatic activities at the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran were completely suspended following the incident. However, a few employees remained in the Iranian capital to safeguard the embassy building and properties.
