Armenian premier rules out snap elections prior to border delimitation with Azerbaijan

    REGION  18 April 2024 - 09:24

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has firmly stated that he will not call for snap parliamentary elections until the issue of border delimitation with Azerbaijan is resolved.

Responding to concerns raised by a resident of the borderline village of Berkaber regarding the urgency of holding early elections, Pashinyan emphasized the significance of addressing the evolving geopolitical landscape,  Caliber.Az reports, citing TASS.

"I do not think that this [early elections] is necessary. What we are doing is reacting to global geopolitical changes," Pashinyan remarked.

His assertion underscores the government's commitment to prioritizing the resolution of border disputes with Azerbaijan before considering any electoral processes.

The border between Armenia and Azerbaijan has been a focal point of contention, particularly following the 2020 Second Karabakh War, which resulted in Armenia’s withdrawal from the former occupied Azerbaijani territories. The delineation of borders remains a critical issue for both nations, with ongoing negotiations aimed at finding a peaceful resolution.
