US backs Ukraine to maintain favourable world order, VP says

US Vice-President Kamala Harris has stressed that Washington supports Kyiv not for charity, but to preserve the world order beneficial to itself.

Harris made this statement at the beginning of a meeting with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of a conference in Switzerland, TASS reports, citing the YouTube channel of the Ukrainian president's office.

"We support Ukraine not for charity, but because the people of Ukraine and their future are in the realm of our strategic interests. It is in our interest to uphold international rules and norms, such as sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the international system we helped create after World War II. It enhances America's security and prosperity," Harris said.

Harris said that the US would allocate "more than $1.5 billion to meet Ukraine's humanitarian needs". Of this amount, $824 million is earmarked for the restoration of the energy infrastructure.

The US vice president stressed that the security agreement signed this week between Washington and Kyiv "demonstrates [the US's] long-term commitment to Ukraine's defence.
