5.1 - magnitude quake hits Tajikistan Tremors felt in neighboring countries
An earthquake has occurred on the territory of Tajikistan. The tremors were felt in neighboring Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.
According to Volcano Discovery, a strong magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit 26 km (16 mi) away from Karakenja, Republican Subordination, Tajikistan, in the morning of March 22 at 8.47 am local time. The quake had a very shallow depth of 10 km (6 mi) and was felt by many near the epicenter. The shallow depth of the quake caused it to be felt more strongly near the epicenter than a deeper quake of similar magnitude would, Orda.kz reports.
The earthquake was felt not only in Tajikistan, but also in neighboring countries. According to the Institute of Seismology of Kyrgyzstan, residents of several villages felt the tremors with intensity of 3-4 points. Gazeta.uz also reports that the earthquake was felt in Tashkent and Syrdarya region (intensity of 2 points), in Andijan and Namangan regions (2-3 points), in Fergana region (3 points).
The earthquake was not felt in Tajikistan.
