Denmark’s king tasks PM with leading new government talks
Denmark’s King Frederik X has for the second time since the general election asked acting Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen to lead negotiations on forming a new government, according to DR.
Frederiksen, leader of the Social Democratic Party, said after meeting the monarch that coalition talks would begin the following day and proceed at a rapid pace. She expressed confidence that a new government could be formed, Caliber.Az reports via Danish media.
She said she aims to build a centre-left coalition involving the Social Democrats, the Socialist People’s Party (Green Left), the Social Liberal Party (Radicals), and the Moderates.
However, analysts say Frederiksen is likely to face difficult negotiations with Lars Løkke Rasmussen, whose party’s support is seen as essential for securing a parliamentary majority.
The Social Democrats won 38 seats in Denmark’s 179-seat parliament in the last election, marking their weakest result since 1903.
