AI cuts workload, drives growth for Japanese firms, survey finds

02 February 2026 20:25

Japan’s Finance Ministry reports that 75% of the country’s companies are now incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into their business operations, a sharp rise from 11% five years ago. The survey, conducted from December to January, received responses from more than 1,100 firms, NHK World reports.

AI adoption has surged across companies of all sizes. Among large firms, usage rose to 89% from 19%, while mid-sized businesses increased to 66% from 8%. Smaller companies also saw growth, reaching 65% from 4%.

The survey found that AI is primarily employed for drafting documents, followed by information collection and technical support or development.

On the benefits, respondents highlighted practical efficiencies. “Online chatbots sharply reduced the need to respond to phone calls,” one company noted. Another projected saving approximately 60,000 workhours annually by using AI to create meeting minutes and summarize emails. A retail business reported that sales roughly quadrupled thanks to AI-driven product analysis. Other firms used AI for training, allowing algorithms to replicate the skills of veteran workers.

However, challenges remain. Some companies reported a lack of skilled personnel to implement AI effectively, while others expressed concerns about potential information leaks.
