Analyst: Zangezur Corridor will advance trade between Europe and Asia
The planned transport route linking mainland Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave through Armenia — known as the Zangezur Corridor — is expected to significantly enhance trade and strengthen economic ties among regional countries.
As reported by local media, Alexey Bezborodov, Director General of the research agency InfraNews, shared this view during a broadcast on the Russia 24 TV channel.
According to him, the opening of the Zangezur Corridor will stimulate the economic growth of both Azerbaijan and Armenia, while also positively impacting trade development in Georgia, Iran, Iraq, and Türkiye.
Bezborodov described the route as a short but vital regional link that will boost interregional connectivity.
The Zangezur Corridor, a strategic transport project, aims to connect mainland Azerbaijan with Nakhchivan through Armenia’s southern Syunik region. Proposed in the aftermath of the Second Karabakh War, the initiative seeks to ensure direct and unhindered access between the two Azerbaijani territories.
In August 2025, a trilateral agreement reached in Washington between the United States, Armenia, and Azerbaijan established the framework for opening the corridor. The agreement aims to facilitate trade, transport, and broader regional connectivity.
Once operational, the corridor is expected to strengthen Azerbaijan’s logistical links with Nakhchivan, enhance trade routes between Europe and Asia, and contribute to major infrastructure initiatives such as the North-South and Middle Corridors. It is also projected to bring tangible economic advantages to Armenia through transit revenues and infrastructure investment.
The project has garnered wide international support, including from the Organisation of Turkic States, underscoring its potential to advance regional integration and long-term economic cooperation across Eurasia.
