ANAMA chief briefs new EU envoy on ongoing mine threat in Karabakh
Azerbaijan Mine Action Agency (ANAMA) Chairman Vugar Suleymanov has briefed the new head of the European Union delegation to Azerbaijan, Marijana Kujundžić, on the ongoing mine threat in Karabakh.
During the meeting, Kujundžić was informed about the extent of contamination in Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur, the obstacles mines pose to reconstruction efforts and the return of former internally displaced persons, as well as the mine-clearance operations being carried out, Caliber.Az reports per ANAMA.
The sides discussed the EU’s continued support for humanitarian demining in Azerbaijan, the possibility of implementing new projects in this field, and other issues of mutual interest.
ANAMA, created in 1998, serves as the state body tasked with clearing landmines, anti-tank mines, unexploded ordnance (UXO) and other explosive remnants of war across conflict-affected territories.
After the 2020 war, Azerbaijan regained large areas heavily contaminated with mines and UXOs, making ANAMA’s mission essential for the safe return of displaced residents, the launch of reconstruction projects, and the revival of agricultural and economic activity.
The agency works jointly with UNDP, the European Union and other international partners, and releases regular monthly reports on the progress of clearance operations.
