Azerbaijani, Armenian energy officials discuss infrastructure synchronization

Energy officials of Azerbaijan and Armenia have discussed the synchronisation of infrastructure during a meeting in Azerbaijan's Lachin region.

The talks focused on possibilities for electricity imports and exports between the two countries, as well as options for synchronising the infrastructure along the state border for this purpose, Caliber.Az reports, citing state media.

The meeting was attended by representatives of Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Energy, Azerenerji OJSC, and Armenia’s Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure and Electric Power System Operator company.

Armenia and Azerbaijan have made major progress toward normalising relations after decades of conflict.

Recently, the European Union has also welcomed the progress over the past year, while urging the two sides to complete the remaining steps towards a peace agreement.

The main barrier to formal signing and ratification is Azerbaijan’s demand that Armenia amend its constitution (or adopt a new one) to remove references to the 1990 Declaration of Independence, which Baku interprets as an implicit territorial claim involving Nagorno-Karabakh.
