Armenia may lose right to host World Weightlifting Championships

Armenia may be denied the right to host the World Weightlifting Championships due to the incident with the burning of the Azerbaijani flag at the opening ceremony of the European Championships in Yerevan this week.

The remarks came from the Deputy Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Armenia, Karen Giloyan, reports Sputnik Armenia.

On April 14, during the solemn opening ceremony of the European Weightlifting Championship, held in Yerevan, Aram Nikolyan snatched the flag of Azerbaijan from the flag bearer and set it on fire, after which he ran off the stage with it.

“The most depressing thing is that almost yesterday, even before the incident, we received the right to host the 2024 World Cup. This would be an exceptional opportunity for us,” Giloyan said.
