OTS chief backs Azerbaijan’s vision for joint space regulations

23 April 2025 11:26

Azerbaijan has put forward a proposal to develop unified legal standards for regulating joint space activities within the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS), according to Secretary General Kubanychbek Omuraliyev.

Speaking at the 4th meeting of the space agencies of OTS member states, currently being held in Baku, Omuraliyev underscored the importance of this initiative for enhancing institutional cooperation among member countries, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

"An important step in institutionalising our cooperation was the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on space activities at the summit in Bishkek on November 6, 2024. As a continuation of this process, the Azerbaijani side proposes to develop unified legal standards to regulate joint space activities," he said.

Omuraliyev emphasised that the establishment of such standards would bring legal clarity, enhance transparency, and ensure alignment with international norms and practices.

The Secretary General also voiced the OTS's strong support for Azerbaijan’s broader efforts to promote collaboration in the space sector, particularly its initiative to establish a Virtual Space Academy.

"We firmly believe that human capital development and education are key elements of space cooperation. In this regard, we welcome Azerbaijan’s proposal to establish the Virtual Space Academy, as well as training programs on Geographic Information Systems (GIS)," he stated.

Omuraliyev highlighted the potential impact of these proposals on nurturing future generations of space professionals. "These initiatives will open opportunities for young people and specialists to expand their knowledge and skills, fostering interest and professional development in space science," he noted. "We expect that Azerbaijan will provide more detailed information on these proposals today."

The meeting in Baku brings together representatives of OTS member states to further consolidate cooperation in the field of space exploration and technology.
