At least 60 killed as severe winter storms hit Afghanistan
Severe winter storms and freezing rain in Afghanistan have killed at least 60 people, while another 110 have been injured.
The natural disaster has caused serious damage to infrastructure, Caliber.Az reports, citing Afghanistan International.
A total of 458 homes have been fully or partially destroyed, affecting 360 families. In addition, 620 head of livestock have reportedly died.
The heaviest damage has been recorded in mountainous and rural areas, where buildings and infrastructure are not designed to withstand such conditions. Snowstorms lasted from Wednesday through Friday, disrupting transportation and power supply. Snowdrifts have blocked most major highways and regional roads, while authorities have warned of the risk of avalanches.
Power supplies imported from abroad have also been cut off due to damage to transmission lines and the collapse of power pylons.
According to The South Asia Times, the provinces affected include Kabul, Parwan, Panjshir, Ghazni, and Nuristan.
