Azerbaijan continues discovering Armenian-left weapons in liberated lands

11 March 2024 10:59

The efforts to detect and seize weapons and ammunition abandoned by Armenian forces during the Second War in territories liberated by Azerbaijan persist as authorities intensify their operations.

Ongoing raids are being conducted by employees of the Jabrayil region police department on former battle sites and enemy fortifications, the Azerbaijani Interior Ministry told Caliber.Az.

"In the latest operation conducted in the village of Sheybak, an assault rifle and two shells for a tank gun were discovered and seized," stated the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Additionally, in the city of Khankendi, efforts to clear Armenian weapons from the area are ongoing. As part of comprehensive measures, law enforcement officers uncovered a cache of weapons and ammunition.

The press service of the Interior Ministry reported the seizure of eight machine guns, along with 930 rounds of various calibres, three fuses for hand grenades, and other equipment in Khankendi.

These developments underscore Azerbaijan's commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the liberated territories by systematically removing any remaining threats posed by abandoned weapons and munitions.

The continuous efforts by Azerbaijani authorities demonstrate their dedication to restoring normalcy and stability in the formerly occupied regions, facilitating the return of displaced populations, and laying the groundwork for reconstruction and development initiatives.

Following a 44-day Second Karabakh War, Azerbaijan emerged victorious, reclaiming control over significant portions of its territory that had been under Armenian occupation for nearly three decades.

The liberation of these territories, including the strategic cities of Jabrayil, Fuzuli, Zangilan, and Shusha, has been met with jubilation and pride across the nation. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev hailed the victory as a triumph of justice and a testament to the bravery and resilience of the Azerbaijani people.

In a series of military operations characterized by strategic precision and determination, Azerbaijani forces successfully ousted Armenian troops from key positions, restoring sovereignty over areas that had been subject to occupation since the early 1990s.

On September 19, 2023, Azerbaijan initiated a series of counter-terrorism measures to neutralize Armenian military forces and infrastructure in the Karabakh region. The decision to launch this operation was prompted by escalating Armenian assaults on Azerbaijani positions, as well as a tragic mine incident in the Khojavand district that resulted in the deaths of four Azerbaijani police officers and two road construction workers.

By the time the hostilities ceased on September 20, the Azerbaijani military had successfully incapacitated artillery systems, radio-electronic warfare capabilities, military equipment, ammunition depots, military strongholds, and shelters belonging to Armenian army units stationed in the Karabakh region.

The counter-terrorism measures concluded after the Armenian military formations agreed to full disarmament by laying down arms, handing over the military hardware, and withdrawing from their battle positions and military outposts. Armenia's armed forces were also obligated to leave Azerbaijani territory, and illegal Armenian armed groups were to be disbanded.
