Azerbaijan has new plans to combat climate change, says COP29 chief BCAW 2025

30 September 2025 11:47

Azerbaijan has new plans to address climate change, said COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev on the second day of Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW 2025), Caliber.Az reports, citing local media outlets.

Babayev recalled that COP29 in Baku also extensively discussed the transition to a “green” economy: “Issues of energy security and energy exports were considered. The next stage of the energy transition, including the development of clean energy, was discussed. Regulation in the field of clean hydrogen became a topic of discussion among representatives from 60 countries.”

He added that Azerbaijan aims to enhance the flexibility of its energy system: “Discussions are ongoing to ensure the transition to renewable energy. Today, we face the challenges of climate change. Given certain critical signals in this area, more active participation from the private sector is necessary. Azerbaijan is investing in the development of green energy, setting goals, and defining national priorities in this field.”

Meanwhile, addressing the event, Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov said that the Baku Climate Action Week holds special significance for implementing the outcomes of COP29.

According to Shahbazov, the event further strengthens Azerbaijan’s active role in the global climate movement: “BCAW2025 is an authoritative platform that accelerates the advancement of the global climate agenda at local and regional levels, showcases innovations in the green transition, and encourages broad cooperation. This platform is also particularly important for implementing the results of COP29 and advancing a clean and just energy transition.”

The minister noted that COP29, which became a strong impetus for global climate action, opened new horizons for equitable solutions and rapid development of renewable energy: “As President Ilham Aliyev stated, the world has witnessed a historic achievement in Baku. Azerbaijan has already played an unprecedented role in this process by strengthening its position on the international stage as a green energy country and demonstrating initiative in the global fight against climate change.”

The event features speeches by COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev, the President of Azerbaijan’s Special Representative for Climate Affairs, Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov, Deputy Director of the Azerbaijan Renewable Energy Agency Rena Humbatova, and other officials.

Topics discussed at the event include exploring Azerbaijan’s potential in solar energy, offshore wind energy, production of blue and green hydrogen, geothermal energy, increasing climate resilience through international cooperation, and moving from promises to action: promoting the legacy of COP29 through corporate sustainability.

It is worth noting that in 2024, COP29 successfully held the first Baku Climate Action Week in partnership with London — a similar event aimed at mobilising society ahead of COP29 in November 2024.
