14 February 2023 15:49

Azerbaijani Prosecutor-General Kamran Aliyev held a telephone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Jafar Montazeri at the latter's initiative on February 13.

Montazeri expressed condolences to the Azerbaijani people, relatives and friends of the deceased and those injured in the deadly armed attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran on January 27 and also expressed regret over the crime, Caliber.Az reports citing the press service of the Azerbaijani Prosecutor-General's Office.

He also provided Aliyev with detailed information about the progress of the investigation into the crime.

In turn, Aliyev condemned the terrorist act and noted that Azerbaijan's investigative bodies continue their investigation into the case. He stressed the importance of a full and comprehensive investigation, identifying all the perpetrators and bringing them to justice, as well as the causes and conditions of the terrorist attack.

At the end of the conversation, the Azerbaijani and Iranian prosecutors general agreed to keep this case under control and ensure mutual legal cooperation in the investigation of the terrorist attack.

On the other hand, according to Mizan News Agency affiliated with the Iranian Judiciary, Muntazeri informed his Azerbaijani counterpart that various aspects of the attack have been carefully studied by the country's judicial and political authorities, TRT Haber reports.

Iranian Judiciary Spokesman Masoud Setayashi has said that an investigation into the January 27 Azerbaijani embassy attack is being conducted secretly at the preliminary stage and all aspects of the incident are being carefully examined.

Setayashi made the remarks at a press conference in the capital Tehran, TRT Haber reports, citing Iran's state television.

Asked about the stage of the investigation into the attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran on January 27, Setayeshi said: "The investigation into the attack is at a preliminary stage and is subject to confidentiality. The different dimensions of the subject are being carefully examined."

The Iranian spokesman stated that the findings obtained will be made public after the investigation ends.

To recap, a security supervisor of the embassy was killed and two security guards were injured in the armed attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran on January 27.

Tehran Police Chief Hossein Rahimi said that the attacker was captured after the incident and that according to initial investigations, the attack was organised "due to personal and family problems". Rahimi was later dismissed from office.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, on the other hand, described the attack as a terrorist act.

After the attack, the activity of the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran was suspended on January 29, and all staff and their families returned to Baku.
