Azerbaijan marks world environment day with anti-plastic campaign PHOTO

A high-profile environmental event under the theme “Reduce the use of plastic: local efforts, global impact” was held on June 5 at Samur-Yalama National Park to mark World Environment Day. 

Organised by Azerbaijan’s Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry, the event brought together government officials, environmental experts, and civil society representatives to discuss strategies for reducing plastic waste and promoting individual environmental responsibility, Caliber.Az reports per the ministry.

Key speakers included Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources, Energy and Ecology Chairman Sadig Gurbanov; Deputy Ecology and Natural Resources Minister Vugar Karimov; Chairman of the Board of “Clean City” JSC Etibar Abbasov; and Deputy Chairman of the Republican Association of Trade Unions of Agrarian, Environmental and Water Management Telman Guliyev. They underlined that environmental protection remains a state policy priority in Azerbaijan.

The programme featured a round table with participants from both public and private sectors, alongside experts who discussed the environmental impact of plastic and the urgent need for environmental education.

The day also included training sessions, interactive activities, and thematic masterclasses with the involvement of schoolchildren and volunteers to raise public awareness from an early age.

The Ministry noted that Azerbaijan is set to host World Environment Day on June 5, 2026 under the auspices of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), highlighting the country's growing role in global environmental initiatives.
