Azerbaijan reports serious health condition for incarcerated Armenian national
New details have emerged regarding the health of Vagif Khachaturyan, currently in custody in Azerbaijan.
According to Emil Gasimov, Head of the Intensive Care Department at “Yeni Klinika” and advisor to the Executive Director of TƏBİB, 70-year-old Khachaturyan was urgently admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit on the night of December 23, 2025, in critical condition. He was diagnosed with severe aortic stenosis, moderate mitral stenosis, and decompensated chronic heart failure, which resulted in pulmonary edema and severe respiratory failure, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
Gasimov reported that intensive care interventions, including medication, fluid balance management, and non-invasive ventilation, have produced positive progress.
“While the patient has passed the critical life-threatening phase, his condition remains serious. Treatment continues under close monitoring in the intensive care unit,” he said.
Khachaturyan was convicted of committing genocide in the village of Meshali in the Khojaly district as part of illegal Armenian armed formations. On November 7, 2023, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
