Azerbaijan summons Russian ambassador, issues formal protest over unfriendly actions
The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has summoned the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Russian Federation, Mikhail Yevdokimov, to convey a formal protest over recent unfriendly actions by Russia that have harmed bilateral relations.
During the meeting with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Araz Azimov on July 2, serious concerns were raised regarding the raids conducted by Russian law enforcement on June 27 in Yekaterinburg, where Azerbaijani nationals were targeted. Azimov expressed deep distress over the deaths of two Azerbaijanis and injuries to several others, reportedly resulting from excessive violence during the operations, Caliber.Az reports, citing the ministry.
“The Russian explanation of the incident contradicts the visible signs of severe violence and expert medical reports on the deceased,” Azimov stated. “Moreover, the portrayal of Azerbaijanis as an ‘ethnic criminal group’ in some Russian media is unacceptable and reflects ethnic intolerance.”
The Azerbaijani side called for a “comprehensive and objective investigation” into the legal violations committed by Russian law enforcement agencies, insisting that those responsible be held accountable. The Deputy Minister stressed that Azerbaijan’s position is being unfairly characterised as interference in Russia’s internal affairs.
Addressing concerns about actions taken at the office of “Sputnik-Azerbaijan,” Azimov clarified, “The measures implemented are fully in accordance with Azerbaijani law, and the investigation is ongoing. Objections from the Russian side on this matter lack legal basis.”
The downing of an Azerbaijan Airlines aircraft over Russian airspace late last year was also discussed. Azimov criticised Russia’s handling of the aftermath, stating, “The failure to take necessary measures, attempts to distort the facts, and disinformation campaigns against Azerbaijan conducted by certain Russian officials and media outlets are unacceptable.”
He underlined that Azerbaijan expects “a full and transparent investigation, identification and accountability of those responsible, and appropriate compensation to the victims.” Such steps are crucial “to overcome the negative atmosphere currently impacting our bilateral relations.”
The meeting further highlighted recent statements by Russian socio-political figures and media that challenge Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, which have contributed to increased tensions.
Azimov concluded by emphasising that these actions “contradict the spirit of friendship and mutual respect between our countries” and called on the Russian side “to take all necessary measures to eliminate tension and restore a positive atmosphere in our bilateral relations.”
