Azerbaijan’s security chief warns of threats posed by mercenaries

17 September 2026 20:10

The involvement of citizens in military operations as mercenaries through various means poses a serious security threat, says Azerbaijani State Security Service (SSS) Chief Colonel-General Ali Naghiyev.

Speaking at the 28th meeting of the Conference of Special Services of Turkic States in Kazakhstan, he noted that these factors negatively affect security and exacerbate the crime situation, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

“The involvement of citizens through various means in military operations as mercenaries, as well as the smuggling of weapons, ammunition and explosives illegally removed from conflict zones, poses a serious threat to security,” he clarified.

Naghiyev drew attention to new global and regional threats arising from contemporary geopolitical developments, including the severe consequences that ongoing large-scale military confrontations are having on the functioning of transport corridors.

During the event, the participants discussed the global situation and measures to ensure regional security amid contemporary challenges. A relevant document was signed following the meeting.
