Bangladesh expects Rooppur nuclear power plant to begin operations soon
Bangladesh is hopeful that the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant will enter operation in the near future, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman said during talks with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov.
“One of the symbols of our cooperation is the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. We have just completed the first fuel loading. We hope it will be commissioned soon,” Rahman said.
The Rooppur plant, featuring two VVER-1200 reactors with a combined capacity of 2,400 MW, is being built under a Russian-designed project approximately 160 kilometres from the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka, under a general contract signed on December 25, 2015.
For Bangladesh’s first nuclear power plant, the country selected Russia’s Generation III+ VVER-1200 reactor design, which meets international safety standards. The first unit reached the physical startup stage on April 28, 2026.
Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom plans to complete construction of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in 2027.
