Beijing confirms invitation to Trump-proposed Gaza Peace Council

20 January 2026 12:12

China has received an invitation to join a proposed “Peace Council” on Gaza, initiated by US President Donald Trump, Beijing’s foreign ministry has said.

Speaking at a regular briefing on January 20, foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun confirmed that the United States had formally invited China to take part in the initiative, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

The “Peace Council,” formally known as the Board of Peace, is a key pillar of President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace initiative and was endorsed by UN Security Council Resolution 2803 in late 2025. It is envisaged as a temporary international authority to govern and oversee Gaza in the aftermath of the two-year war between Israel and Hamas.

Details of the council’s structure remain undecided, including its precise role in coordinating Gaza’s reconstruction, while invitations to potential members are still being issued.

Argentina, Hungary, Türkiye, Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan, Qatar and Italy have confirmed their participation, whereas France, Germany and the United Arab Emirates have yet to respond.

In parallel, a separate “founding Executive Board” — comprising figures such as Jared Kushner and Tony Blair — will concentrate on strategic investment and diplomatic engagement. Several countries have also been invited to take part in this initiative.
