Berlin pushes for EU reform and faster enlargement VIDEO
Berlin has signalled support for a more ambitious enlargement of the European Union, alongside deep institutional reforms aimed at strengthening the bloc’s efficiency in foreign and security policy.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul presented a six-point reform plan designed to improve the EU’s decision-making capacity amid what he described as growing geopolitical challenges, DRM reports.
In his proposal, he called for major institutional reforms to enhance the EU’s effectiveness amid growing geopolitical threats. In particular, Wadephul suggested abandoning the principle of unanimity in decision-making and shifting to qualified majority voting.
He also advocated accelerating the European Union enlargement process, including through a phased accession of new countries, arguing that this would allow faster integration of candidate states and strengthen the bloc’s overall resilience.
