Bild: German intelligence steps up surveillance of Russian Embassy in Berlin

German intelligence services have stepped up surveillance of the Russian Embassy in Berlin, including regular and conspicuous helicopter flights over the diplomatic mission’s premises, according to government sources cited by Bild.

Vans allegedly belonging to German intelligence services have also been parked near the embassy for several days. The newspaper reports that the purpose of the conspicuous operation is to increase pressure on Russian embassy staff.

In addition, according to the publication, German authorities plan to tighten scrutiny of Russian businesspeople and their family members who hold German visas. When entering the country, they will be asked “uncomfortable questions,” including about the purpose of their visit to Germany and their activities in the country.
