Bloomberg: Qatar loses status as reliable LNG supplier amid Iran tensions
Qatar has reportedly lost its position as a reliable supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) due to the ongoing situation in Iran, Bloomberg reports.
“The Qatari shutdown is unprecedented in scale and scope,” said Ira Joseph, senior research associate at the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University. “Short term, it will force anyone who needs LNG to bid up US cargoes. Long term, it changes how buyers look at Qataris in terms of security of supply.”
According to Bloomberg, Qatar’s Energy Minister, Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, is facing the “biggest crisis of his career” after an Iranian drone attack forced a halt at the country’s flagship LNG facility in Ras Laffan.
The disruption in Qatari LNG supplies is expected to shift buyers’ perceptions regarding energy security, potentially increasing reliance on U.S. LNG exports in the coming months.
