Britain rallies Europe behind Ukraine after Oval Office clash $2 billion military aid secured

03 March 2025 09:48

Britain hosted a summit of European leaders on March 2, in a bid to strengthen support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, following a dramatic confrontation between him and US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office.

The incident has raised concerns over the stance of key allies regarding Ukraine’s ongoing struggle against Russian aggression, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

The meeting in London gained heightened significance, focusing on the defence of Ukraine and the wider security of the European continent. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed leaders from more than a dozen nations, along with other senior officials, and reaffirmed his commitment to seeking an end to Russia’s war on Ukraine. Upon Zelenskyy’s arrival, Starmer embraced the Ukrainian leader, signalling strong British support.

During the summit, Starmer announced that Britain, France, and Ukraine had agreed to develop a ceasefire proposal to present to the United States. He stated that the plan emerged from discussions between the three nations' leaders following the fallout from the White House dispute.

Moreover, the United Kingdom has signed a new economic agreement with Ukraine, providing Kyiv with a £1.6 billion ($2 billion) loan for military acquisitions, including air defence missiles.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the deal at a press conference in London following a meeting of European leaders on Ukraine. He stated that the funding, allocated through a British credit agency, would enable Ukraine to procure over 5,000 anti-aircraft missiles manufactured in Belfast.

Starmer also highlighted that, on February 3, the UK and Ukraine finalised a separate agreement for a £2.26 billion ($2.8 billion) loan, sourced from proceeds of frozen Russian sovereign assets.
