Brussels calls for end to unilateral bans on Ukrainian agricultural imports
The European Commission is calling on Hungary and other EU member states to lift unilateral restrictions on imports of agricultural products from Ukraine, European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier said.
In Brussels, officials stressed that such measures could fragment the EU single market and are not justified following the updated free trade agreement between the EU and Ukraine, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
“We call on the relevant member states to lift their unilateral measures and continue engagement to achieve this outcome,” Regnier said.
The European Commission also noted that the revised agreement includes safeguard mechanisms that can be activated if import-related problems arise, but said it does not consider the current national restrictions necessary.
However, the Commission did not outline any possible further steps, limiting itself to saying that consultations with member states, including Hungary, are ongoing.
